Bowen, Peter - Gabriel Du Pre 10 - Badlands

Badlands (2003)
(The tenth book in the Gabriel Du Pre series)
A novel by Peter Bowen

A wealthy millennial cult from California relocates to the outskirts of the Montana badlands. Gabriel Du Pre soon learns that seven of their recently defected members have been killed - then another murder occurs.

Product Description

A secretive millennial cult from California purchases a ranch on the outskirts of the Montana badlands, the eerily silent, dry, and windy dead zone, and the Toussaint townsfolk are none too pleased.
The cult members keep to themselves, but the suspicious circumstances under which they arrived have Gabriel Du Pre questioning their motives and seeking answers. He soon learns from a friend in the FBI that seven of the cult's recently defected members were killed, each shot to death, but no arrests have been made. Then another shooting occurs at the perimeter of the ranch, and Du Pre finds himself blindly searching for a killer, an explanation for the murders, and the identity of the cult's elusive leader.
With Badlands, his tenth novel in this acclaimed series, Peter Bowen has written his most timely and chilling novel to date.

From AudioFile

Montana sheriff's deputy Gabriel Du Pre
investigates when a skeleton is found on a ranch in this first novel in a series. The delight of this mystery is not the plot, but the characters and the details of life among the Meti (half-French, half-Native American) people. Christopher Lane shares those details with an intimate voice that drawls but still moves quickly. He gives a thick but clear accent to Du Pre, occasionally blurring the lines between Du Pre's conversations and his thoughts but still creating a rich character. He gives a whiny voice to the alcoholic Bart as the novel weaves itself around those two characters. J.A.S. © AudioFile 2005, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
