Bowen, Peter - Gabriel Du Pre 01 - Coyote Wind

Coyote Wind (1994)
(The first book in the Gabriel Du Pre series)
A novel by Peter Bowen

A cowboy has found the wreck of the plane that had been missing for 30 years. Gabriel Du Pre, cattle-brand inspector who doubles as a deputy, sees that one of the sun-bleached skulls, the one with the bullet hole, doesn't belong. He wants to avoid the matter, but a rich man's demons, another murder and Du Pre's own past keep pulling him back--to the truth.

From AudioFile

Montana sheriff's deputy Gabriel Du Pre
investigates when a skeleton is found on a ranch in this first novel in a series. The delight of this mystery is not the plot, but the characters and the details of life among the Meti (half-French, half-Native American) people. Christopher Lane shares those details with an intimate voice that drawls but still moves quickly. He gives a thick but clear accent to Du Pre, occasionally blurring the lines between Du Pre's conversations and his thoughts but still creating a rich character. He gives a whiny voice to the alcoholic Bart as the novel weaves itself around those two characters. J.A.S. © AudioFile 2005, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
